Happy New Year!

It is a lovely day in Texas. The sun is shining, with a slight crisp chill in the air. Just a little more than a long sleeved t-shirt needed.

At the last minute yesterday, we invited some friends over for dinner and fireworks. I had never purchased fireworks before and I gave myself a limit of $20. After standing in the line (I was the 3rd person on my line) for 25 minutes (my aching legs throbbing), I was quick and to the point: I want kid-friendly, not too loud, colorful fireworks. I left having spent $15 and was happy.

We feasted on corn enchiladas, yummy queso, delicious salad, and Spanish rice. Matthew is quite petrified of the loud noises. Always has been. I gave him the option of staying in the house, but he didn't want to be all alone. So I encouraged him to sit on my lap, and eventually he even lit a few. Tyler got really into it with Michael and the other guys. We met up with our neigbhors across the street as well and had a good group going.

Michael had to stop out a small fire from the lawn, but no other casualties.
It's so fun to hear the delighted scream of young children. Alyssa and her friend Jacob practically did a 2 person wave as each firework went off. It was so cute.

Friends left around 8, kids went to bed. Michael and I watched Hancock and went to bed at 11. I've always been against going to bed before midnight, but it just doesn't seem to matter to me anymore. We were however still awake at midnight because of all the fireworks in the neighborhood. Michaeal said in a low monotone voice: "happy new year" and I said, "oh yeah, you too" and I fell asleep shortly thereafter. I guess he was up for a while.

I had an early morning photo shoot and we had the rest of the day to work on the "to do" list and put away Christmas. The kids were sad to take the tree down, but its gotta get done.

As for New Years Resolutions, I've never been into those, but have changed my tune. We did all share one for FHE on Monday and wrote it down like we did last year. Its nice to be able to remind each other. I've got a few personal ones, but I shared with the fam that I want to memorize a scripture a month. But I am going to try for a scripture a week and do the scripture mastery for BOM and D&C (I'm going to print out the little cards on there). I memorized a bunch as a teenager, but want to know them better. It's a way to meet another goal of immersing myself more regularly in the scriptures.

Anyway, Happy New Year! Michael is making his specialty homemade pizza for us tonight and we're going to watch Horton Hears a Who. Almost done with my first Christmas post, so stay tuned.....

I have never been big on resolutions, either. I like the idea of setting goals, but I always forget about them after a few weeks. ;o)

I love fireworks. Wish we could do them in my city... Sounds like a fun evening!

It's illegal to set off fireworks in Killeen. But that didn't stop any of our neighbors. I believe we are the only house on the block that didn't break the law on New Years.

I wish you good luck with your resolutions. I hope you are able to keep them!

Ah, kids and fireworks. A time-honored tradition in my family. Now that I'm a mom myself I'm AMAZED that my parents were so free and easy with the pyrotechnics during my childhood. There was a burn or two every year, but I guess that's all part of the fun.

It sounds like just the right night. I'm with you, it's not that big of a celebration for me anymore. Midnight seems a lot later than it used to. Your dinner sounds scrumptious though.
