Strawberry pickin' in California

While staying near Watsonville (known for strawberry farming) we decided to go pick some ourselves at a "u-pick" farm. Gizdich Ranch was the spot we went. Every time we drove from town to our condo on the beach, we passed fields and fields of workers picking strawberries. I felt bad for them, they must have sore backs. We did a little immitation of that scene, our family workers pickin'.

We sampled them as we picked and they were surely delicious. Matthew said he never wants to buy strawberries from the store again--always wants to pick them himself. I wonder how well strawberries would grow in our garden...probably not well. Anyway, here are pictures of the pickin'.

Alyssa found a "daddy" strawberry
matthew munching as he picks

tyler weary from all the work weighing all the berries we collected...it ended up being about $20 for this whole tray...not badWe also got fresh Olallieberry pie from the farms bakery. I love myself some berry pie. Has anyone ever heard of an Olallieberry? The olallieberry (pronounced oh-la-leh, sometimes spelled ollalieberry, olallaberry, olalliberry, ollalaberry or ollaliberry) is a cross between the loganberry and the youngberry, each of which is itself a cross between blackberry and another berry (raspberry and dewberry, respectively). Interesting, huh?

It's such a good thing I'm visiting home next week, otherwise I think readying you blog would make me super jealous and sad that I'm not there. It's exciting to see you at familiar places. Makes me wish I was there to share it with you too.

Those strawberries are making my mouth water! Yummy! I just was catching up on your blog (I've been out of it for a little while) and it looks like you have been having a great summer with your trips, birthday, dancing and other fun stuff. Your pictures are all so great!

You could make picking up trash off the side of the road look beautiful and fun--but these really are "picturesque." Nothing like seeing your kids workin' the land, even if it is someone else's land, I suppose. Suddenly craving strawberries.

Oh fun! This post in particular makes me homesick. I think that area is so pretty and I felt the same way as Matthew when we picked berries. We would pick them by the bucket full and make Ollalaberry cobblers and jams. Yum. Berry desserts are my favorite.
