Greening up our Yard

In April, we built a garden. Thanks to our horticultural friend, Heidi, for showing us the plans to build a raised bed. This was our family home evening project one night...assembled in about an hour (stained ahead of time). We planned on doing a garden for several years, it just never happened.

Such great little helpers....
We each signed our names on the inside
Our friend Casey let us borrow his truck for the dirt
It took a while to unload and haul to the backyard
Such great helpers:)

We planted: carrots, green beans, cantelope, and watermelon
The kids are overjoyed at watching the progress of the plants.
Here is a picture in early May

Here is what it looks like June 2008

We probably put too many seeds in this little box, but the watermelon has spilled over the edges. Such joy from the kids in seeing new developments from the plants. The carrots (far right) didn't take off so well.

THEN, Michael had been wanting to put in St. Augustine sod to replace our Bermuda grass. It wasn't my top choice of things to spend $$$ on. We first tilled the dirt in our existing yard (which he says was mostly weeds) and then we worked together to lay the sod down. Of course Michael worked the hardest, then the boys, and I was um...making sure Alyssa was safe, and making sure this was well documented. I did pitch in some despite my disdain for any type of yardwork. I helped till and carried the sod, but of course there are no picture of me doing it, so just believe me:)

Matthew is standing on a big root from the tree behind him...it stuck out in our yard and my friends son, Jacob, loved to jump over the "snake" everytime he came to our home.

The boys enjoyed collecting the earthworms in the ground

4 weeks and a lot of water later......GREEN GREEN GRASS...Michael is oh, so pleased:)

I loved having so much help from everyone. I believe the two main purposes of yardwork are 1)to help families learn to work together, and 2) give homeowners associations something to gripe about. Ours is particularly picky about the state of the yard, so this project was meant to get them off our case. It is very satisfying to me, for the first time in my adult life I can say I have the greenest lawn on the block. Great job to the entire family!
