a buncha stuff in october

so with 2 birthdays and halloween and pumpkin patches and almost one bday (tyler on nov. 1st) and the busiest time for fall pictures, october is always super crazy and filled with lots of pictures...this year is no exception. I decided to throw in OUR family pics and the making of a quilt and baby outfit for it.  wowzers!  i sorta thrive on crazy though...
first up, i helped paint a map of the united states on the concrete at the kids schools.  i only got to help for an hour, but i painted in Utah and Delaware, two states that are special for our family!
A few sewing projects, my friend Debra Temple helped me with several and I made her look at the camera for a picture...

below is for a skirt for alyssa, she made one for her daughter, too

this firetruck that i got for matthew's 2nd birthday is still a big hit!

my good will finds below...2 mini ladders and a chair

we had a guy come build a wall around our tree and dig down a foot or so to properly preserve it in hopes it won't die on us.  the neighbor boys helped haul the rocks michael got to the back.

3 big kids

I love this picture in their school attire...they have been loving the new school...and I just love hearing from all 3 of their teachers that they enjoy them. They are growing up, and such good kids.  I just love them.

Cali snack

Don't you just want to eat her??? Oh my, how we all adore her around here. As she learns to talk and mimic and grow up, we all hang on her every move, it is just too cute to look away.  The kids are begging to have more, and my heart breaks that we may not, but I am relishing this adorable adorable baby time.
LOVE her!

My roommate visits!

I had known for a few months that my BYU roommate Amy a.k.a. Amylicious was coming to visit.  Just so happens that the day before was a tragic day in our town (see below post) and her visit was overshadowed by all of that.  But all Amy wanted to do was sit and visit and chat and get caught up, so it was PERFECT! She definitely got a glimpse into our family!  I loved that in the weeks leading up to her visit here, she kept a notebook of all the questions she wanted to ask me and get full detailed answers to.  From mothering to school issues to home decorating to my photog biz...it was all covered!  She and I had lots of classes together back in the day because we had the same major.  She is someone I look to as an example to ME of being strong and immovable in her faith. The last time I saw her was her wedding day, when I met her at the St. Louis Temple with 9 month old Tyler....her sister watched him while I attended inside.  It had been waaaay too long!  Here are some pics of our visit...just 48 hours long.
What is also fun is that she actually knew Michael before I did.  But she watched our relationship "blossom" and she counciled me through lots of ups and downs.  Sadly, she wasn't there the semester we got engaged, she had graduated and moved out of state. But she did come back for our wedding;) Oh, and she and I both briefly dated Michael's brother, Steve, but 9 months apart from each other (I was first, but who is asking)....what, you didn't know about that one? And Steve was before Michael is you really don't know that story.  I have typed it out somewhere on this blog...

anyway...she captured our family fun (she brought me the pink socks and all of my kids John Deer shirts)

It was just SO great to see her again, to relax and talk and laugh about the good ole days;)   Oh, and here is her take on the trip to Texas. She took and shared these pics with me, so you will see duplicates.

September Stuff

On September 15th, something tragic happened in our community, to our ward family at church.  Rod Dial, a man whom we've known for 8 years, died in a kayak accident.  He was 50, father to 6 children, 4 of whom I have taught in some capacity at church, currently his 14 year old son Joseph is in my sunday school class.  He taught our Sunday school class a few years ago and would bring his guitar to share spiritual thoughts.  I looked to him as a man who loved life and loved his family.  His kids, adult kids, adored him.  I've seen recent pictures of him twirling those adult girls, or in a bear hug with them.  3 years ago, I took their family pictures in front of their red barn, but we haven't been in the same ward the past few years as it got split, but the past 6 months, we have been again. I am writing this 3 months later, and I still tear up at the thought he is gone.  A good, good man, the tragedy struck too close to home. He was out in the family kayak, as they do many times, going down the Brushy Creek.  It had recently rained a lot, and the waters were high...thats how they liked it.  He was out with his 17 year old daughter.  I've heard that he told her to jump out as they approached a bridge he could tell would be more dangerous.  She jumped out, just as they were capsizing.  Long story short, he hit his head and went down stream face down.  No one wanted to believe it could happen to him, an adventurous spirit, always doing crazy things.

When the phone tree started going around, we didn't know yet that he had died, just that he was missing. Immediately, I thought to call Kelsey.  He as like a father to her, as I found out later...he was to many youth.  She joined the church in high school, and they took her in when her family was un supportive. She didn't go to church a lot during college, but a year ago, turned her life around and headed out to Provo.  I called her, and she hasn't heard yet.  She was hysterical.  I wished I didn't have to be the one to tell her.  She was then with Kyria...Rod's daughter.  I heard them cry together on the other end of the line.

Kelsey flew down the next day with her boyfriend, Steve.  They stayed her the next few days and because of them, I was able to be a part of conversations that I might not have otherwise been.  The mood around the Dial home was definitely sad, but lifted up--carried. I knew it was the thousands of prayers poured out on their behalf.  Even now, our children pray that the Dial's will be comforted.

I could never begin recount the stories I heard of him.  THey had a bonfire for people to share stories, and I was in awe of all he did for so many people.  My love for him as a person, as an example, deepened. His newly married son wept at the funeral in front of a filled to capacity church and hundreds watching online.  He wept that his children will never know him...it made me weep as well.  My boys came with Michael and I, Rod's youngest son, Luke, is in Tyler's class at church.  I wanted them to be a part of the whole experience, they both cried as well, but I knew they could feel the overpowering spirit of love, and that was important to me for them to experience that.

In the evening, after the funeral, I was asked by some ladies at church to help put together a scrapbook for the family.  About 15 of our had their stash of family photos throughout the years and arranged them as we talked and told stories about him.  I then went to the home with all of the family and friends that came in from out of town (Laura Kandare, Michelle Cook, Marianne Lloyd) and felt a part of their intimate circle, as Kelsey included me.

I don't like the pain that accompanies loss.  It hurts, and this person was not someone I was super close to, but his influence and kindness and smile were felt by so many.   Through it all, I know our Father in Heaven has a plan for us.  I know that his family WILL be comforted, and Jennifer (his wife)  made me feel like I helped in the smallest of ways as she gushed over some brownie bites I made for her and her family.  I have been so impressed with her and how she has conducted herself.  She has not tried to hide her grief, but been open about it (she told me she threw up for 30 hours straight after he died and then first wanted powdered donuts).  I don't like it one bit, but I know this family will be blessed.

Here are pictures of Kelsey and I and Kelsey and Steve.

she loves Cali and thinks her name should be Cali Faith... and calls her that.
I just love this girl, and having her stay with us for a few days was so wonderful.  She inspires me with HER faith, and I am blessed that I was able to be her YW leader 5 years ago, and we've been able to stay close these few years.  She calls me often from in Utah, and I love that she wants to tell me her highs and lows and I have the opportunity to share with her my perspective being just a few years ahead of her in the game.

This event impacted me so much, I don't look forward to growing old and seeing even more.  I know I will see it. RodDial.com is a site they have set up for the family.

Happy December!!!

I am so excited that almost all of my Christmas decorations are up and it's just December 1st!  We are going on Friday to cut down our Christmas tree, so I will be sure to share more pictures once we have decked ALL of our halls.  Here is just a snippet of our mantle.  Being in a new home, I've had to figure out where to put everything.  Luckily, my sis in law Alayna helped me quite a bit last weekend.  I don't decorate with red at all, so it was fun to throw it in there with my green armoire. I spray painted a frame (that was a dull gold I never liked) for the subway art.  I got the design free from eighteen25 along with the tutorial for the 3 glitter trees I made.  They originally had turquoise in the color scheme (which I LOVED) but I am traditional Christmas colors over here.  I changed to grey (trying to do silver) and diff. shade of green in photoshop.  I love the statement of the red frame.  I like bold.  I also needed a little lift to my leaning frame to cover up the plugs on the wall above the matle, so put them on top of spools of ribbon, which add a nice texture underneath. Red suitcases I placed there just b/c they are red and I've never used them...the red basket is filled with Christmas books.  Kids Little People nativity on hearth, with a few snowmen and JOY next to it.  LOTS of "joy" decor in this house. My stockings, I am working on.  My mom helped me make the 3 for my kids 2 years ago, and I need to make 3 more.  Hubby and I got stockings as a wedding gift that are....not my style, so I decided I want ones similar to the kids. I got them pre-threaded at the edges at Michael's a few years ago, and got the idea for the stripes and circles from the crate and barrel catalog about 5 years ago.  THIS was taped to a wall in my craft closet for several years before I did anything about it:  Happy first of December! I've got so many fun things planned for this month, I will try my best to document and share them with you lovely readers;)
